U.S. Government Jobs: A Growing Opportunity for New College Grads

If you're looking for job security and growth, consider the opportunities in the U.S. government.

Over the next 5 years, almost half of all employees in U.S. government jobs will be eligible for retirement. That means significant opportunities for new college graduates. In fact, nearly 21,000 new jobs are posted every day to www.usajobs.gov.

If you're interested in working for the federal government, start now by choosing an appropriate college degree. According to Where the Jobs Are: The Continuing Growth of Federal Job Opportunities, the most U.S. government jobs are expected to be in the following areas.

Security, Enforcement, and Compliance

The FBI and CIA are large employers in this group of U.S. government jobs. If you're interested in law enforcement, corrections, or security, look for college degrees in criminal justice or public safety. Most federal positions will require a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Medical and Public Health

The federal government needs health professionals to serve in government hospitals, advisory panels, and public health initiatives. Appropriate degrees for this group of U.S. government jobs include nursing, health administration, and medical billing and coding.

Program Management and Administration

If you're good at organizing, planning, and motivating teams of people, you may want to pursue a career in program management or administration. Clerical administrative positions may require an associate's degree in business or a related discipline, while upper level management positions will probably call for at least a bachelor's degree in management.

Accounting, Budget, and Business

All government organizations need accounting, budget, and business professionals. If you're detail-minded and good with numbers, this group of U.S. government jobs may be right for you. To prepare for a successful career, look for associate's or bachelor's degrees in accounting, finance, or business.
