Teaching Math and Reading: U.S. Test Results Show Room for Improvement

National scores on reading and math tests for U.S. school children were released this Tuesday. The results show a significant improvement has been made in teaching math to the nation's children. However, reading scores are another story, says The New York Times.

The last time the national test was given was in 2005. It's called the National Assessment of Educational Progress and was given to 700,000 fourth and eighth grade students in all 50 states.

Teaching Math Adds Up to Success

Math scores are impressive, with fourth graders at their highest levels in the past 17 years of teaching math. The percentage of fourth graders meeting proficiency levels in math is up to 39%, 8 percentage points higher than when the No Child Left Behind act went into effect.

Reading Scores Lag Behind

But those same fourth graders improved only marginally in their reading scores, and eighth graders' scores actually declined. Proficiency levels are also discouraging, with the percentage of students reading at proficiency down in 18 states.

The Bush administration says test results are encouraging. However, critics say that whatever improvements were made were on track to happen before NCLB was enacted.
