Registered Nursing Jobs: What Makes New Grads Stay?

The American Journal of Nursing just released the first national study of newly-licensed Registered Nurses. The results will hopefully lead to solutions among a population with a high rate of turnover.

The Importance of Keeping New RNs

If a shortage of 340,000 RNs is predicted to materialize by 2020, it is crucial to retain new nurses, says Christine Kovner, a professor at New York University College of Nursing. That's why this AJN study seeks to understand the working conditions and opinions of new workers in registered nursing jobs.

More Education Means More Job Commitment

Education appears to make a difference in whether newly-licensed nurses are likely to stay put in registered nursing jobs. According to the study, 58.1% of the nurses with an associate's degree planned to leave their jobs, while just 37.6% of nurses with a bachelor's degree said they planned on leaving their jobs.

New nursing grads who wanted to leave their registered nursing jobs most often cited poor management, stressful work conditions, and wanting experience in a different clinical area as the impetus for change. Other common findings among nurses both employed and unemployed in the field were injuries, job interference with family life, and inadequate supplies to do their jobs.

Retaining More RNs

The editor-in-chief of AJN says hospitals need to do more to help retain young graduates in order to fully combat the nursing shortage. From the results of this first study, it looks like there's still a lot of work to be done.
