Rising levels of enrollment in online degree programs earned AIU Online (American InterContinental University)
and CTU Online (Colorado Technical University) an
invitation to Capitol Hill. In 2005, education policymakers requested a
demonstration of the online degree schools' virtual campuses. The demonstrations
were intended to assist with decisions about the Higher Education Act
reauthorization.1
AIU Online and CTU Online Provide Flexible, Affordable Access to
Education
Stephen C. Fireng, president of the Career Education Corporation's Online
Education Group, credits the rise in online degree students to the flexibility,
accessibility, and affordability of schools like AIU Online and CTU Online.
Before the era of online degree
programs, full-time workers had difficulty finding time to attend a
physical classroom. Rural students also had difficulty gaining access to a
college campus.1
Thanks to online degree programs, AIU Online and CTU Online now serve students in 50 states and 66
foreign countries. AIU Online and CTU Online have approximately 25,000 full-
time, degree-seeking students. The total number of students in the whole Career
Education Group was 96,700 as of April, 30, 2005.1
Dynamic Resources Available to AIU Online and CTU Online Students
The virtual campus demonstration revealed a surprising amount of student
resources. Interactive technology demonstrated dynamic, online classrooms, and
student services were well-equipped to handle a wide variety of issues. Through
the demonstration, AIU Online and CTU Online hoped to positively impact
legislation that is relevant to the online learning community.1
AIU Online and CTU Online Positively Impact Education Legislation
The Higher Education Act reauthorization passed Congress, and online education
continues to thrive. Thanks to favorable legislation, AIU Online and CTU Online
continue to offer online degree programs in information technology, business, criminal justice, healthcare and more.2
