Master's Degree in Nursing: Poor Pay Pushes Nursing Instructors Away

A new report gets to the bottom of the cause behind recruiting and retention problems for nursing instructors.

Despite the looming nursing shortage, nursing schools turned away 42,866 qualified applicants to bachelor's and master's degree in nursing programs in 2006 alone. College officials cite a lack of nursing instructors, clinical sites, preceptors, and other resources as the limiting factors to accepting more students.1

A Closer Look

A recent report by the National League for Nursing and Carnegie Foundation Preparation for the Professions Program reveals that pay may be the primary problem for nursing instructors. The report looked at the salaries of nursing instructors and compared them to instructors in other academic fields. It also analyzed the salaries of professionals with a master's degree in nursing in clinical and other nonacademic settings.2

Findings Reveal Unequal Pay

The findings revealed what has long been suspected. Nursing instructors earn just 76% of what U.S. faculty earn in other academic fields. In 2006, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) also found that Nurse Practitioners with a master's degree in nursing earn an average of $72,480 per year, whereas nursing instructors with a master's degree in nursing earn an average of just $58,249 per year.1, 2

Not surprisingly, 53% of nursing instructors said that they will leave their positions within the next year primarily due to insufficient compensation.2
