List of College Degrees is Expanding in the U.S.

The number of universities and the degrees they offer are expanding in the U.S., says a new report by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The number of universities has increased by 1.5% from the fall of 2005 to the fall of 2006, and the list of college degrees available has expanded by 3%.

For-Profit Universities Offer the Longest List of College Degrees

Most growth occurred in the for-profit sector, although it continues to educate a small proportion of the total U.S. population. The number of private, for-profit 4-year universities grew by 9.4%. Likewise, the number of degree offerings at private, for-profit 4-year universities rose by 20%.

Women and Minorities Earn More Degrees

Also of note in the NCES report, college degrees awarded at U.S. universities have been going to increasing numbers of women and minorities. 57.8% of degrees were awarded to women in the 2005 � 2006 academic year. 65% went to white students, down from 65.5% the previous year.
