Graduate Degrees Gain Popularity and Worth

More students than ever before are enrolling in graduate degrees at U.S. colleges and universities. Despite high tuition rates, students say the degrees are well worth the time and effort.

The number of students enrolled in graduate degrees has almost doubled since 1980, says a recent report in The New York Times. And since 1970, enrollment has grown by 150%. That's more than twice as much as bachelor degrees and doctorate degrees.

Exorbitant Costs Do Little to Deter Students from Earning Graduate Degrees

These high levels of growth come on the heels of tuition hikes, leaving some students shelling out as much as $50,000 per year at private universities. Unlike doctorate degrees, graduate degrees rarely offer fellowships to help out with the cost of living and studying. Still, students continue to show up to campus and online courses for more graduate degrees.

More Jobs, More Money

Students agree the cost of graduate degrees is a worthwhile investment. Graduate degrees may qualify employees for jobs they otherwise would not receive. The degrees can also go a long way towards attractive salary boosts.
