College Students and Alcohol: Separating Fact from Fiction

The popular notion of college students regularly drinking excessive amounts of alcohol may be a false stereotype. Recent research on college students and alcohol shows a very different picture.

How Much do Students Really Drink?

Researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill set out to define how much college students actually drink. Beginning in 1997, they tested more than 2,000 students heading back to their dormitories. Breathalyzer tests revealed that college students and alcohol don't mix, especially on week nights.

On Monday through Wednesday, 85% of college students had no alcohol in their systems. And even on "party nights" 2 out of 3 college students still had no alcohol in their bodies.

Results Encourage Students to Cut Back

Next, researchers publicized their findings on college students and alcohol. The results developed into a campus-wide initiative to educate students about what their friends are really doing when it comes to alcohol. The hope was to encourage college students to cut back on their drinking and not be sucked into a culture that often pushes dangerous habits.

Later in 2002, researchers brought their breathalyzers back to the dormitories. The results of the second test were even more encouraging than the first. Researchers found that college drinking had decreased by 15%. The average number of beverages drinkers consumed also decreased from 5.1 to 4.3.

Using Social Norms for Positive Behavior

Researchers say that educating students on social norms is one approach to solving a problem with college students and alcohol. However, they caution, it may not be successful in all situations.
