College Gender Gap Continues to Widen

The college gender gap is showing no signs of improvement, says a recent report from the National Center for Education Statistics. Although the report is intended to track how minorities are faring in the U.S. education system, the most telling data may be related to men.

College Gender Gap Shows No Signs of Improvement

The percentage of men in college has been declining and is certainly not a new finding. However, the NCES report shows that the college gender gap is continuing to widen. In 1976, men made up 52% of college students in the U.S. In 2004, the most recent year with available data, men made up just 42.9% of total enrollments.

Black Women Earn Twice as Many Degrees as Black Men

Women are also outpacing men in the total number of college degrees earned. One of the most pronounced differences shows up in the black student population. According to the NCES report, in 2004 black men earned 87,728 college degrees. Black women earned over twice as many degrees, a total of 184,183.

Minorities in Higher Education

In the midst of the college gender gap, minorities fared well over time. The NCES data on minority students shows good progress over time. However, disadvantages still exist related to access and success in higher education.
