Capella Online University: Quality Education Makes Cents

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune Capella University is earning a reputation among students and investors alike.

Capella online university students have reason to be proud of their alma mater. The school's stock has more than doubled since November, 2006. Just this week, stocks rose to $50 per share, up from $20 last November. And to top it off, Capella has also seen a whopping 55% increase in second quarter earnings for the year.1

Online Enrollment Soars

For-profit education companies are doing well overall, points out the Star Tribune, at more institutions than just Capella. Online university enrollment is up to 1.5 million students and growing by 20% every year. Although substantially larger than online universities, nationwide enrollment at traditional institutions is increasing at only 2% annually.2

Capella Moves Ahead

Still, Capella has moved ahead of the pack. Stephen Shank, the CEO of Capella, told the newspaper that students are attracted to Capella online university offerings not only for the convenience, but also for the quality of education. In an attempt to stay afloat amongst big name competitors like the University of Phoenix, Capella has funneled their resources into a fewer number of academic programs overall.2

Shank said Capella's focus has been on education, health care and human services, and business and information technology management. They've especially honed in on graduate studies and offer programs all the way up to the PhD level online.2
