Looking for career guidance in an undergraduate program? You're not likely to find it in the California state system.

14% of U.S. undergraduates attend California colleges and universities in the state system. But a new report shows students may not be receiving the kind of career preparation they need to succeed in the workplace after graduation.

Public Universities Fall Short of Real-World Expectations

The report, released by the California Postsecondary Education Commission, says many students in California colleges and universities don't know which career they want to pursue by the time they graduate. Instead, they're getting lost in a maze of courses that should provide a foundation for a successful career.

The culprit appears to be a gross lack of career guidance at California colleges and universities in the state system. In fact, some campuses with thousands of students only staff one or two career counselors.

Private Universities Get it Right

In light of the disturbing findings at California colleges and universities, a few of the state's private institutions are answering the call to duty. American InterContinental University in Los Angeles prides itself on equipping students with real-world knowledge. Likewise, the University of Phoenix, with campuses in San Diego, the Bay area, and more, offers a host of career-focused degrees.
